In the vibrant and dynamic landscape of Ghana, Aware International stands out as a beacon of hope and opportunity for African youth. As a youth-focused NGO dedicated to education, cultural exchange, and social impact, Aware International has made remarkable strides in 2024, as detailed in its recently released Annual Report for that year. With a clear mission to inspire and equip young people with the skills and opportunities they need to thrive, the organization is reshaping communities across Ghana through innovative programs, strategic partnerships, and a steadfast commitment to empowerment.

A Year of Impactful Achievements

In 2024, Aware International achieved remarkable milestones across its key programs. Our flagship program, Sound and Colour Africa, in partnership with Ghana’s Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, was a great succeess. Programs under SACA had significant impact on the youth as was determined.

Culture Aloud, a vibrant festival of African art, music, and storytelling, hosted three successful editions in Kumasi, drawing over 600 attendees from diverse backgrounds. This platform showcased the talents of 10 emerging artists, providing them with visibility while fostering cross-cultural exchange and deepening appreciation for Africa’s rich heritage. Attendees, including diasporans and expatriates, left with a renewed understanding of the continent’s artistic narratives, highlighting the program’s role in bridging cultural divides.

The Female In Music Program (FIMP) addressed gender disparities in Ghana’s creative arts and entrepreneurship sectors, training 12 young female musicians in music composition and business skills. Every participant secured an internship with renowned music groups, demonstrating the program’s effectiveness. A standout success story is Christabel Takyi Akwaboah, known as Shanti Ba, who, after completing the program, performed the award-winning track “Educate Me” in the Beyond Music Social Change Competition. Her collaboration with Grammy-winning artists like Angelique Kidjo, Pheelz, and Wiyaala underscores how Aware International is opening doors for female artists in a traditionally male-dominated field, boosting their confidence and career prospects.

Aware International’s participation in the Beyond Music Social Change Song Competition marked another high point, earning the organization international recognition and adding over 2,000 new followers on social media. This global exposure not only amplified its mission but also created opportunities for collaborations with artists worldwide, reinforcing music’s potential as a catalyst for social transformation.

Ahead of Ghana’s 2024 national elections, the Peace Campaign in Kwadaso Constituency reached over 500 community members through house-to-house engagements and media promotion of its revamped “Peace Song” on platforms like Garden City TV and social media. The campaign inspired over 100 youth to become peace ambassadors, fostering unity, tolerance, and non-violence to ensure a peaceful electoral process and strengthen community bonds.

These achievements are supported by Aware International’s broader programs—Aware Learn, Aware Music, Aware Climate, and Aware Voice—which focus on education, mentorship, and social advocacy. The organization’s impact metrics for 2024 are impressive: 80% of Culture Aloud participants reported a deeper appreciation for African heritage, while 85% of Coach and Training Program trainees noted increased confidence in navigating the music industry. These figures reflect Aware International’s tangible influence on empowering Ghana’s youth, instilling pride and agency in their cultural identity.

SOME CHALLENGES WE FACED

Despite its successes, Aware International faced challenges in 2024, including limited funding, logistical hurdles like venue and tech support difficulties, and the need for stronger institutional partnerships. Its SWOT analysis identifies strengths such as proven programs, strong local and international recognition, and dedicated leadership, but also weaknesses like funding constraints and reliance on volunteers. However, the organization sees opportunities in expanding corporate sponsorships, leveraging digital platforms for outreach, and enhancing collaborations with government and international entities.

Aware International thrives on the support of donors, partners, and volunteers, and it actively invites contributions to sustain its mission. Individuals and businesses can get involved through one-time or recurring donations, in-kind support, or sponsoring events and programs.
